After days of begging him to come, he relented. He was skeptical of them and with a reason, because they were superstitious and cursed boxes from the sky was too outlandish even for them. He was received by the village people as well as he has always been, but they were too eager to receive him. With the reception done with, it was time to investigate. The purportedly cursed site wasn't too far, given the distances they frequently travel. He was taken to the site, a flat hilltop and he could barely believe his eyes, sitting on the grassy ground was an unnervingly perfect grid of mirrored cubes. He approached against the beseeching of the townspeople accompanying him. The place was unnaturally quiet apart from the wind, the animals which would normally occupy fertile ground like this were absent. As soon as the wormhole started opening, alien broadcasts unabashedly started pouring in and only became more noticeable and undeniable as the gaping hole in space-time widened until it was big enough to let a small moon through. As soon as the first ships of the fleet crossed the aetherial threshold, a small vanguard shuttle was sent on a long journey towards the source of the broadcasts, the third planet from the lone star at the heart of the system. The shuttle, Blue Dawn, looks like a misshapen cube suffering from cubic cancer. Blue Dawn’s passengers are three Akina, small, bird-like beings. Their streamlined torso is wider at the front with five spiracles, a pair closer to the back and three clustered under the neck. Their two sickle clawed wings attach to the front half of the chest, the «tail» is a flattened member with a five fingered hand-paw and the likeness of a feathered tail. Mariana returned to the workshop to pick up the rock hammer and called Jake to come with her. He was initially confused, but followed her even as she armed herself with a hunting knife. “What’s that about?” Jake pointed at the sheathed knife on Mariana’s belt. “There are boars.” she said, leading him into the surrounding forest. The farms are enclosed in barbed wire fences and sharpened sticks and protected by large dogs which barked at the stranger accompanying Mariana. As they walked away, the farms gave way to a sparse, mossy forest with the occasional lichen covered boulder showing up. “It’s a nice, but tough walk.” Jake sat on a mossy boulder to rest. “A bit of a steep incline. But doable by anyone.” Mariana stood near Jake. It’s a cloudy, cold morning in the more mountainous regions of Gerês. A taxi is driving towards a small, derelict village with barely a human soul in it. All streets are narrow to some degree, the houses are made of heavy granite bricks and mortar, a couple of farms surround the outskirts, inhabited by a few animals and small plantations with fruit trees sparsely distributed. “Do we really have to walk home?” an English speaking man, Jake looked at the narrow, winding cobbled streets, picking their luggage up. “Come on, we’re just less than a hundred metres away.” Mariana, a Portuguese woman, closed the taxi which started turning around in the perilously steep path “Furthermore, only motorbikes can drive in the narrower streets.” Jake is a tall, skinny and pale man with green eyes, long, reddish hair and a ponytail, he likes to wear colourful and baggy clothing and never leaves his beanies behind. It’s been a restless day since crashing, a day they spent fixing themselves, relocating their spherical laboratories and excavating a concealed place for them, fixing what was broken and cleaning up several litres of blood, preparing cattle-504 for butchering, treating cattle-517, picking up countless glass shards from the more fragile equipment and erasing most traces of their presence. Each laboratory is a large, whitish sphere with a smooth hull, which is currently dented, the one which contained both animals, being a geological lab is the largest, has no airlock, its roof is a geodesic covered by large cloth shutters, most of its panels are shattered or cracked to some extent, it has clothes and random belongings haphazardly thrown in over the voluminous surveying, excavation and carving equipment, the excavator is now in use, freeing space in the lab, the interior of the other is packed with chemical and biological analysis and synthesis equipment and reagents on labelled metal

What a doozy.

This evening, I had to paint a tomb, clean two others and look for grannies house keys. Granny left her keys on the couch, they slipped into a cloth basket...it took longer than I want to admit.
